Greetings

As we close in on the US Open here at California's Torrey Pines I'm reminded of how important the short game is for winning that tournamant. In this issue I'm going to share some tips on how to make more clutch putts and how to control the trajectories on your wedges.

If you like you can enter my US Open contest at the Moe on Golf blog. If you pick the winner you'll win a two- day golf school at either our Sonoma or Napa locations. Enter here...

As some of you know I have two boys 12 and 8 years old. Every summer it's a scramble to figure out what to do with them. So for parents like me I've started monthly Parent-Child golf school in Napa. Find out more...

 Make Clutch Putts

Demonstrating the firm left side There isn't a golf tournament more stressful than the US Open. Besides it being a coveted title the pros know if they don't strap on their caps right that day they may shoot 90. Typically the guys who drain a few six foot putts early for par gain the confidence they need to get them through the week.

My inspiration for this week's video is from meeting a chap by the name of Marious Filmalter, a superb golf teacher (Hunter Mahan and another guy named Tiger something) and foremost expert on the putting YIPS (which I once had for years). Marious showed me this simple exercise...

 Control your wedge trajectories
 Hitting high and low wedges

Dennis demonstrates rotation drill The first thing I look for in a golfer is their ability to hit wedges (30-50 yards). Most golfers can only hit a high wedge, and even so, very inconsistently. Consistency is what we all what and if you can learn to hit a wedge with controlled trajectories you'll be on your way. Watch this video...

 Carbon and water footprint calculator

Thankfully people are becoming more conscious of how their living and consuming habits effect the environment. These two websites offer a short questionnaire for you to see your personal footprint.

Most americans consume over 600,000 gallons, what is your water footprint?

Greetings,

I hope you've got a golf event of some kind on your calendar that'll fire you up. For me to get me fired up to want to play and practice I have to get some tournament or event on my calendar. What will it take to fire you up? A round a Pebble? Beating your father- in-law? Breaking 80? Club championship? Figure that out and do it!

The carrot for me this year is the National Club Pro Championship in Georgia in early Summer. We're playing for a $500,000 purse and the top 20 finishers get an invite to the PGA Championship (yes Tiger will be playing). For me to play my best I have get in shape, tune up the clubs and play a few rounds under pressure.

I actually got out the last couple weeks to compete again. I tried a Nationwide qualifying at Castlewood and basically forgot how to get the ball into the hole and shot an 80. Yeck. The following week I played much better, the 80 it turned out toughened me up and I played well. I lost in the second round of match play but I like the way I played.

If you would like to get toughened up a bit check out some of these specials in the next couple of weeks.

Create more snap in your golf swing
Using leverage from the ground like a baseball pitcher

Demonstrating the firm left side We all love it when the club swings with effortless power. I call it snap. Swinging a club is like snapping a towel. When your timing is on you are essentially combining this snappy action with the power from your bigger muscles (core, glutes and back). Wouldn't you like more of that?

I collabarate each month with Al Barkow to produce an article in Golf Illustrated and a blog called Moe and Barkow on Golf blog. He's truely a golf writing legend and I'm honored to spend time with him. We sit around with an iced tea and talk for an hour or two about various golf swing ideas and he turns my long dissertations into relatively easy-to- read articles. I thought you might enjoy sitting in on this process while we discussed "Hitting Against a Firm Left Side". If you click this link you'll get the edited down version with a few choice nuggets to improve your game.

In a nutshell here's what we discussed:

  • There is a chain reaction of links that top golfers consistently fire in sequence
  • Power is much greater when you leverage your energy from the ground up
  • The snapping sensation is very similar to the mechanics of throwing or kicking a ball
  • Your feet's positioning is one of the key links in this chain

On the course I demonstrate the way you can to position your feet correctly each time

Kris Moe Wine's 19th Hole Wine Club Event
Next wine release and event June 13th for US Open

Dennis demonstrates rotation drill All of you and your friends are welcome to these golf parties I put on. I'm promoting the wine but I also like to reconnect with many of you and give you a chance to meet some of the other nice people who read the golf school newsletter.

If you'd like to learn more about the wine or purchase it please start by visiting the 19th Hole Wine website. Here we've got recipes (yes I love to cook), information on the wine, videos and probably best of all, dates and times of special wine functions we'll be offering through the year.

For our April 11 golf party, we had forty golfers . We celebrated the Masters, listened to a jazz band and sipped and swirled some of my wine. We also had a fun net and gross stroke play competition for "Moe Money" and a closest to the hole and Long Drive contest. For those of you who came out thanks again.

The next 19th Hole Wine Club golf outing will be Friday, June 13th during the US Open. I'd love to pick a spot where many of you would like to play. I'm thinking Cinnabar Hills in San Jose or Pasatiempo in Santa Cruz. But I'm open to your suggestions. You can email or call me at 707-939-0523 or go directly to our blog for Nineteenth Hole Wine.

I'll be announcing these golf events in the golf school newsletters but if you like you can contact me with your email address for our Kris Moe Wines newsletter. 707- 939-0523.

Please weigh in to share your interests and comments on the newsletter. You may also want to check out the blog I write with Mr. Barkow at www.moe ongolf.blogspot.com or for the wine blog and to sign up for the Kris Moe Wines newsletter click here.

 Practice golf athletically

Kris Moe's reactive chipping drill Hitting a moving ball could give you an entirely new sensation of striking a ball, especially if you've played tennis or hockey. I've gotten some really exciting results from students doing this drill.

Our reative chipping exercise video tip

 Start hitting a power draw!

Dennis demonstrates rotation drill Do you want to hit the golf ball further? One of the keys to put less backspin on the golf ball by putting less loft on the clubface. Dennis Mitchell has a great way to teach golfers how to roll their forearms. We find most golfers never learn how to do this so I think you'll find this video very benificial.

Here's the video tip by Dennis
